Hika Elliot – ALL BLACK #1086

For a player whose time in the All Blacks was never extensive, Hika Elliot developed a remarkable cult following, because of the vigour and energy of his play.

He was never an original All Blacks selection, owing his four appearances to injuries to those chosen ahead of him. And despite his charismatic qualities there were reservations about his favouring the flamboyance of the loose to the hard graft in the tighter aspects and over some of his lineout throwing. Yet with the wider public he was always a popular figure.

He made his All Blacks debut because of an injury to Andrew Hore on the 2008 end-of-year tour. He was on the bench for the midweek game against Munster and came on for the final 18 minutes. His test debut came two years later when he started the internationals against Scotland and Ireland. He then received his third and final cap in early 2012 when he replaced Hore for the final 23 minutes of the test against Ireland at Eden Park.

His All Blacks hopes later in the year were dashed when the younger Dane Coles was called in for the end-of-season tour.

Elliot was a promising teenager who played for the New Zealand under 19s in 2004 and in the same year was captain of the secondary school side. He played, indeed, for a wide range of national sides: the under 21s in 2006, the Divisional selection in 2005, the Maori All Blacks in 2008 and was in the Junior All Blacks in the IRB Pacific Cup tournament in 2009.

He first played for Hawke’s Bay in 2005 and had the last of his 83 games for the Magpies in 2012. Surprisingly, at least to everyone outside the Bay, he was not wanted for the 2013 season. Instead, he was snapped up by Counties-Manukau for whom he had the satisfaction of playing in a winning Ranfurly Shield side against his old union.

His first Super rugby was with the Hurricanes, but his game time was limited because of the presence of Hore and from 2009 he was with the Chiefs, with whom he lifted his Super appearances to 85. In 2012-13 he and former Manu Samoa captain Mahonri Schwalger shared the hooking berth, but Elliot was involved in both of the winning finals in those seasons.

In late 2013 his career appeared to have come to a premature end with a serious neck injury received playing for the Maori against Canada. But in the latter part of the 2014 season he had a few games in the Heartlands competition with Poverty Bay and because of an injury to new All Black Nathan Harris, he was recalled to the Chiefs as cover for the 2015 Super competition.
